UK Broadens Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Warning Roster with Eleven Destinations
British government has placed an additional eleven more countries to its public alert roster concerning the risks of toxic alcohol toxicity from contaminated spirits.
The revised advisory features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of industrial alcohol poisoning.
Just recently, authorities had already placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, following several notable cases such as the tragic loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of methanol can cause permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Industrial Alcohol and In what way is it Employed?
Industrial alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol commonly employed in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. This chemical is not intended for ingestion.
Although it is naturally produced during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, licensed producers lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for human consumption through the distillation process.
But in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to save money, and since it is flavorless and smell-free, it is very difficult to detect.
Authorities' Advice for Tourists
Foreign Office representative a senior official stated that every traveler should know the symptoms of methanol toxicity.
"While consuming alcohol overseas, opt for reputable establishments and avoid unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," the minister said.
"If something appears suspicious, such as a fatigue that's way worse than normal or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor immediately."
The full register of countries listed as carrying a threat of methanol poisoning now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
