The Tooth Fairy Story Review: Animated Journey with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Preteen Love Story
Throughout this animated adventure aimed at tweens, the world of fairies is dedicated to collecting teeth from sleeping youngsters and leaving gold under their pillows. Board-riding youthful nonconformist fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s completely understandable. He’s only slightly more interested in the underlying economics of the situation: the fairies hand over the molars to unseen goblins, who supply gold as payment. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who turns out to be not at all the ugly gnome he had imagined.
A Forbidden Connection and Shared Threat
The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of young love (though it’s perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from each other, and there’s nothing like the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. The two species portrayed in the film are incredibly similar, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the other. Fairies are said to be entitled sorts, prone to taking whatever they fancy, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, smelly, and backward, but are in fact intelligent and technologically advanced.
Of course, this scenario requires a shared foe to join forces against, and that need is met by a group of vicious spiders, with voices by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.
Target Audience and Final Thoughts
You won’t find very many children’s animations aimed at the viewer group that is starting to experience early romances, but are not old enough for the content 14-year-olds are watching instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, it probably won’t to be their next all-time fave, but you could do worse.
A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and the rest of the UK from 24 October.
