Chinese Ice Dancers Face Investigation After Displaying Prop Weapon during Event

The International Skating Union are conducting an investigation after two Chinese ice dancers appeared with what looked like a replica weapon at a grand prix figure skating event.

Television video showed the skaters sitting alongside a sizable prop in the form of a missile marked “DF-61” as they awaited their scores in the “kiss and cry” area on Saturday.

The DF-61 is a recently introduced Chinese-made land-based long-range weapon capable of carrying nuclear weapons, that had been displayed at a military parade recently.

Officials have acknowledged that an inappropriate plush item seems to have been among those tossed onto the ice by spectators after a routine during the competition,” the organization commented in an emailed statement.

The item was subsequently held by the skaters who had just performed. We regrets the incident and will look into it more deeply.”

The duo placed in eighth place of 10 pairs during the ice dancing competition, which was won by the American pair of the United States.
