Adolescent Found Dead Following Untrue Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
One teenage boy was discovered deceased just days after being wrongly accused of stealing the ashes of a deceased baby during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Flintshire home on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The investigation heard how his mother received a message on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a individual inquiring if her son was her child. The communication stated: "Tell him thanks for burgling my flat."
In a statement read to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the news, asserting her baby's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was untrue.
Police Inquiry
An investigation report from authorities later concluded the supposed break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was not taken in the beginning".
News coverage about the supposed taken remains attracted social media comments, and although the teenager was not identified in the posts, his parent said people "understood it was him".
The "online posts were extremely upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Effect
She added that her son had been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and as part of that disorder, other peoples' views genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
The teenager was arrested at his residence, but nothing was found. He was transported to a police station and later freed under investigation.
Police said they would be in touch, the hearing learned, but had failed to contacted the relatives by the time of his passing.
Withdrawal and Anxiety
His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could seem like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the alleged burglary, she said her child told her he had gone into the residence because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the toilet whenever he wanted, but denied removing anything.
Online Harassment
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, the mother said her child was being harassed digitally after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that a 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and joking".
She portrayed him as a "caring, affectionate" young man, and said her "relatives is completely shattered".
He had been "obviously concealing his concerns", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
School Response
The inquest received testimony from school staff at Connah's Quay High School.
On 8 November, she "heard some students talking that the student had been detained and that was the first I learned".
"He informed me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the discussion, the educator said she called Kai's family landline and left a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The proceedings heard his family said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Finding
Lead coroner informed the inquest he would await documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Providing a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.
"Likely untruths were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the medium of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the police and following his questioning he was freed whilst inquiries continued."
The official determined: "There is no proof that the actions or failures of any agency caused or added to his death and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is not possible to discern his purpose."
